| | Patrict Boddy is all smiles after scoring vs. North Toronto | | |
Strongsville Mustang Pee Wee 1 Hockey team traveled to Detroit for the Motown Cup Nov 30, Dec 1 & 2 finished second. This was the Mustangs first out-of-town tournament of the year. “We’ve played over twenty games this year so far against in and out-of-town teams”, says Mike Boddy, Head coach of the Mustangs. “We wanted to play in a tournament format where we could play teams from Michigan and Canada to test ourselves against top competition”.
The Mustangs play in the Cleveland Suburban Hockey League Pee Wee AA Division, its highest Pee Wee Division.
The Mustangs first opponent was the North Toronto Hockey Club. After a scoreless first period, the Mustangs would strike first with a goal by Patrick Boddy, assist by Zach Randolph and Nick Cucci at the 8:06 mark of the second period. Less than two minutes later, the Mustangs would again score on a goal by Jake Maley with the assist going to Nick Cucci and Aedan Conway. The Mustangs made it 3-0 at the 5:37 mark of the third period with an unassisted goal by Zach Randolph. North Toronto would sneak a goal past net minder Ryan Pinson at the end of the third period to finish the scoring. Coach Boddy cited Sean Nolan and Robbie Graham for their strong play in the victory.
The second game saw the Mustangs matched up against a tough Sarnia Sting team from Sarnia, Ontario. The Mustangs struck first with an unassisted goal by Xavier Baszuk. The Mustangs increased their advantage to 2-0 just 13 seconds into the second period with a goal by Zach Randolph assisted by Jake Maley. The Sting struck back with a goal by Clayton Peters with 6:19 left in the second period to bring the sting within one goal 2-1.
The Mustangs put the game away in the third period with a goal by Aedan Conway, assist by Patrick Boddy making the score 3-1. The Mustangs were helped by solid goaltending from Ryan Pinson and strong defensive play from Will Morgan, Nick Cucci, Josh Grady and Joey Borsuk.
The third game saw the Mustangs face a physical team from Canton, Michigan, Canton Victory Honda. The Mustangs struck first with a goal at 4:31 in the first period with a goal by Xavier Baszuk with an assist from Aedan Conway.
There was no additional scoring until Victory Honda tied the game at one with a goal by David Orlando at the 2:11 mark of the third period. Canton went ahead of the Mustangs 2-1 by a second goal by Orlando. The Mustangs would tie the game just 17 seconds later with a goal by Zach Randolph, assist by Aedan Conway. The game ended as a 2-2 tie.
In the Championship game, the Mustangs would meet up again with the Sting from Sarnia, Ontario. The Mustangs would jump out to an early lead with a goal by Jake Maley, assist to Patrick Boddy and Andre Berglund at 8:58 in the first period. The Mustangs would strike again at the 5:04 mark in the same period when Aedan Conway went top shelf by net minder Max Musico. Assist was from Josh Grady.
The Mustangs were unable to hold on to the lead with the Sarnia Sting scoring a pair of goals with one in the second and one in the third periods. Tied 2-2, the game went into overtime and ended with just 23 seconds remaining.
For the weekend, the Mustangs finished 2-1-1 good enough for runner up in the tournament. “I would have liked to have had the win” said Boddy. “It was a great experience for the kids”
